For Android-to-iPhone migration with Move to iOS, an already-set-up iPhone must be erased so you can use the setup transfer. Reinstalling WhatsApp alone does not restart iPhone setup. Do not erase until you have protected the data already on the iPhone.
Before you begin
- This article concerns an Android source and an iPhone destination, not iPhone-to-iPhone restoration.
- Keep the old Android phone available and confirm that your important conversations still exist there.
- Take stock of photos, files, authenticator access and chats created on the iPhone since setup.
Decide which history you need

Prepare before touching Erase
- List the data you would lose from the destination. Check that anything you rely on has a separate recoverable copy or is actually synced, not merely visible on the phone.
- Confirm you can regain access to essential accounts after a reset. A screenshot of an app icon is not an account recovery method.
- Decide whether the Android history is the history you want to bring into WhatsApp. A text export can preserve a readable record, but it is not a WhatsApp restore package.
- Only after those checks, follow Apple’s erase instructions linked from its migration guide and restart the Android transfer during setup.
Why a backup does not solve the merge problem
Treat an iPhone backup as a recovery option for its own data, not a merging tool. Do not plan to import Android chats and then restore an entire old iPhone backup as if the two WhatsApp histories will be combined.
The destination reset affects local phone data and settings. It does not, by itself, erase the Android phone. Keep that source untouched while you validate the new import.
Know when you are finished
After the Move to iOS copy, complete WhatsApp’s separate import with the same number. Check an older conversation, a recent conversation and several attachments before considering the move complete.
