WhatsApp Stuck Loading After Switching Phones: What to Check

Identify device copying, WhatsApp importing, media restoration or an app that will not open. Protect the old history before retrying a phone migration.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A loading screen after switching phones does not identify a single fault. First distinguish unfinished phone setup, WhatsApp import, media restoration and an app that will not open. Preserve the original phone and any useful backup before restarting a transfer, clearing app data or reinstalling WhatsApp.

Before you begin

  • Record the transfer direction, method, exact screen and error text. This guide concerns changing phones, not every WhatsApp outage.
  • Keep the source data, number access and any recoverable backup. WhatsApp preparation may sign you out on the source without deleting its records.
  • Protect new destination messages too. An old-history restore can replace them, and readable exports cannot later be imported as WhatsApp backups.

Find the stage before trying a fix

Protect the source before troubleshooting

  1. Do not erase the old phone or delete its WhatsApp installation. Check that a needed backup remains available before changing any app data.
  2. Separate the original backup from a newly created incomplete destination backup. Avoid replacing the useful copy while investigating missing messages.
  3. Record which device contains the history you intend to keep and which new destination records need preservation.
  4. While an actual copy or import is active, keep the phones powered and follow its screen instructions. Do not force-close a working transfer as a routine first step.

If the phone setup copy has not finished

For Move to iOS, Apple says the iPhone's loading bar must finish even when Android reports completion first. Duration depends on content size. An unchanged percentage for a chosen number of minutes is not a documented diagnosis.

For a confirmed failed attempt, check available destination space and interruptions. Apple's troubleshooting includes disabling Android cellular data and settings that switch Wi-Fi networks, then restarting both phones before another attempt. Those steps address a failed setup copy; they are not a universal repair for WhatsApp media restoration.

Use the Move to iOS connection and copy checklist.

If WhatsApp itself is importing

Confirm that the same number is being used and that you accepted the history-import prompt after copying. Activating WhatsApp alone does not establish a completed import. For direct iPhone-to-Android transfer, follow the QR/local-Wi-Fi flow and keep the iPhone unlocked.

WhatsApp's Android-to-iPhone troubleshooting page associates an interrupted import with a possible connection error, and describes some explicit errors as potentially corrupted history. It does not establish a universal cause for a particular percentage. Keep the error text and consult the matching official instructions before a new attempt.

Check requirements for direct transfer to Android.

If chats open but media is still missing

For an Android backup restore, Google notes that old images can take time to restore and suggests contacting WhatsApp support if they remain absent after 24 hours. That is guidance for the Android restore case, not a universal waiting time for every migration or stuck loading screen.

Check a few older and recent conversations and compare the backup timestamp with the messages you expect. If a photo was absent from the captured source, waiting alone will not establish its recovery. Keep a stable connection for cloud restoration and retain the source while you determine whether media is still processing or was never included.

If the app will not open normally

When no active transfer is running, Apple's app guidance starts with closing and reopening the app, restarting the device and checking app or system updates. If the destination app still fails, contact WhatsApp support with the device/app versions and error text.

Deletion or reinstallation can lose app-stored data. Clearing WhatsApp app storage on Android removes its local state and can lose newly received destination messages. A factory reset removes the phone's local content and settings. These actions have different scopes and should only follow confirmation of the intended method and a recoverable history.

Reinstalling WhatsApp is not a substitute for returning an iPhone to setup for Move to iOS. Do not clear source data to fix a destination startup problem.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stall at 99% mean the chats are corrupted?

No percentage alone establishes that diagnosis. Note whether it is a phone-copy or WhatsApp-import screen and whether there is an explicit error. Troubleshoot that stage rather than guessing from the number.

Can I reinstall WhatsApp safely?

Only after understanding what local data could be lost and whether you have a usable restore source. Preserve destination records first and leave the original source intact; a reinstallation cannot merge histories.

Should I start again because photos have not appeared?

If messages open, investigate media restoration and source coverage first. Repeating an entire migration may discard new chats without resolving missing source media.
