Transfer Messages from Android to iPhone: SMS vs WhatsApp Chats

Text messages can mean SMS or WhatsApp. Compare their Android-to-iPhone migration paths, backup sources and the choices for an already-set-up iPhone.

THE SHORT ANSWER

To transfer messages from Android to iPhone, first identify the app: SMS belongs in Apple's Messages app, while WhatsApp chats belong in WhatsApp. Move to iOS can copy selected SMS and prepare WhatsApp history during iPhone setup, but WhatsApp needs its own import afterward. Successful SMS copying does not prove that WhatsApp transferred.

Before you begin

  • Check where the messages appear on Android: a carrier messaging app such as Google Messages, or WhatsApp.
  • Keep the Android source available and check whether the iPhone is still in setup. Preserve anything already created on the iPhone before an erase decision.
  • Have access to the WhatsApp number if moving those chats. SIM/eSIM activation is separate from importing a message history.

SMS, iMessage and WhatsApp are different

This guide addresses SMS and WhatsApp history. Do not extend an SMS migration result to every RCS feature, third-party messaging app or attachment format. Inspect the message types and media that matter to you after copying.

Message typeDestinationPath or source to check
Android SMSMessages on iPhoneSelect SMS/message history in Apple's setup transfer; check conversations afterward.
WhatsApp chatsWhatsApp on iPhoneSelect WhatsApp in Move to iOS, then verify the same number and finish the separate import.
iMessageApple's messaging serviceAn Android SMS history is not an iMessage backup; using iMessage afterward does not restore WhatsApp.
Readable chat exportA file reader or archiveTXT/HTML/CSV output is not an official WhatsApp restore package.

If the new iPhone has not finished setup

  1. On the Android phone, identify the SMS conversations and WhatsApp chats you need. Check that the selected content will fit on the iPhone.
  2. Use Apple's From Android setup transfer with Move to iOS. In the content selection, include SMS/message history for carrier texts and WhatsApp separately for its chats.
  3. If WhatsApp is selected, follow its preparation prompts and return to Move to iOS. Keep both phones connected until the iPhone finishes copying.
  4. After setup, check SMS conversations in Messages. Separately open the latest WhatsApp, verify the original number and complete its prepared-history import.
  5. Inspect older and recent records in both apps. Keep the Android phone until both results are satisfactory, then make an appropriate destination backup.

Follow the complete WhatsApp-specific steps.

If the iPhone is already set up

Apple's documented Move to iOS flow requires erasing an already-set-up iPhone to return to setup. First decide whether the old message history justifies that change and protect existing iPhone photos, files and messages. Reinstalling WhatsApp does not restart the device setup transfer.

If you cannot erase, keep the source records while evaluating alternatives. Apple's manual-content link should not be read as a promise of a general SMS archive import or a WhatsApp chat merge. A third-party conversion or transfer claim needs its own supported-input and replacement checks.

Review what an iPhone reset removes and what to preserve.

Use the right backup for the right app

Transferring the SIM or successfully receiving a new SMS proves number connectivity, not migration of past messages. Likewise, seeing WhatsApp group memberships is not evidence that their previous conversations were imported.

What you haveWhat it does not establish
Android device or SMS backupNot an iPhone WhatsApp restore source; a general Google device backup is not the Move to iOS import.
WhatsApp Google Account backupNot a direct iCloud WhatsApp restore. Use a supported Android recovery first when appropriate, then evaluate migration with the phone available.
WhatsApp iCloud backupA different source from Android SMS or Android WhatsApp history.
Exported WhatsApp text and mediaA readable record, not restoration into WhatsApp or merging with new chats.

If one message history arrives and the other does not

  1. Check each destination app separately. Note whether SMS, WhatsApp messages or WhatsApp media is missing.
  2. For missing WhatsApp chats, confirm its selection and import rather than repeating SMS setup checks. For an unfinished phone-copy screen, use Apple's transfer troubleshooting.
  3. Preserve any new destination messages before a retry that could replace data. Do not erase the Android original just because the iPhone can receive new messages.

Frequently asked questions

How can I transfer text messages from Android to iPhone for free?

For an iPhone in setup, Apple's Move to iOS route includes selected SMS and message history without a migration software fee. WhatsApp has a separate preparation and import sequence. Check the result in each destination app.

Why did my texts transfer but not my WhatsApp chats?

They use different data selections and destination apps. SMS appearing in Messages does not confirm that WhatsApp was prepared and imported with the same account number.

Can I email a WhatsApp chat and restore it on iPhone?

A text export keeps a readable record. It is not an official restorable WhatsApp backup and cannot combine the exported conversation with an existing WhatsApp history.
